Records president Mike Maitland joined MCA and initially served as Deccas general manager. Maitland was unsuccessful in his attempt to consolidate Warner Bros. Records with co owned Atlantic Records which led to his departure from Warner. In April 1. 97. 1, Maitland supervised the consolidation of the New York based Decca and Kapp labels plus the California based Uni label into MCA Records based in Universal City, California, with Maitland serving as president. The three labels maintained their identities for a short time but were retired in favor of the MCA label in 1. Drift Away by Dobie Gray became the final Decca pop label release in the U. S in 1. 97. 3. Beginning the same year the catalogs of Decca, Uni and Kapp were reissued in the US on the MCA label under the supervision of veteran Decca producer Milt Gabler. The soundtrack music was arranged and conducted by Marvin Hamlisch and won an Academy Award for Best Original Score MCA issued many other soundtracks to films from Universal, along with some non Universal films. One of the most successful new MCA artists in this era was the rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd. Originating from Jacksonville, Florida, the group would go on to become one of the most popular in the Southern rock genre. The group was discovered and produced by Al Kooper and the records were initially released on Koopers yellow Sounds of the South label imprint of MCA. The song Free Bird peaked at 1. Billboard Hot 1. 00 chart in edited form, but the full length version became one of the most popular songs of all time on album oriented rock radio stations. On the second album, Second Helping, the group recorded a song about their relationship with the label called, Workin for MCA. Three Lynyrd Skynyrd albums reached the double platinum sales level and at least two others reached platinum or gold levels. The album Street Survivors was released in October 1. Mississippi in which members of the group were either killed or severely injured. The original Street Survivors cover had a picture of the band members surrounded by flames, but this was quickly substituted for a revised design without flames. Though a latter version of the group enjoyed success, Lynyrd Skynyrds streak of hits ended after the crash. During the 1. 97. MCA profited from reissuing classic early rock and roll recordings made by artists who recorded for the numerous labels absorbed by MCA. One notable example was the 1. Decca recording Rock Around the Clock by Bill Haley His Comets, which was featured as the lead track of MCAs No. American Graffiti soundtrack album, and as a single returned to the American top 4. Expansion and struggleseditIn 1. MCA president Sidney Sheinberg set up the Infinity Records division, based in New York City with Ron Alexenberg as CEO. Alexenberg had been with the Epic division of CBS Records, now Sony Music Entertainment. The intention was to give MCA a stronger presence on the East Coast. The only big hit the Infinity label had was Escape The Pina Colada Song by Rupert Holmes, a 1 single at the end of 1. Infinity also had some success with Hot Chocolate, Spyro Gyra, New England and TKO. But MCA pulled the plug on Infinity after it failed to sell most of the 1 million advance copies of an album featuring Pope. John Paul II in October 1. Infinity was fully absorbed by the parent company in 1. In 1. 97. 9, Bob Siner replaced Maitland as MCA Records president. Shortly afterwards, MCA acquired ABC Records along with its subsidiaries Paramount, Dunhill, Impulse, Westminster, and Dot. ABC had acquired the Paramount and Dot labels when they purchased GulfWesterns record labels and Famous Music Corp. Thus MCA now controlled material once owned by Paramount Pictures, the music released by Paramounts record labels, and the pre 1. Paramount as well. So if you own only one bird and you work 8 hour days, think about possibly getting him a mate or finding someone to at least keep the bird company for part of the time that you are gone. Parakeets make just as good of pets singly or in pairs or more, but make sure that you introduce one bird at a time. Parakeets are monogamous so once they find a mate it is usually for life unless of course one of them has an untimely death in which the other would then find a new mate. Parakeets are very good flyers. In the wild they fly back and forth across vast regions searching for food and water, so provide them with free flying time and you will have a much happier birds. Offer fresh foods such as eggplant, green peas, cucumber, young dandelion greens, sweet corn, beet greens, carrots, unsprayed lettuce, green peppers, sorrel, spinach leaves, tomatoes and zucchini. Fruits that are suitable are Pineapples, apples, apricots, bananas, most other fruits. Food that is bad for birds includes All members of the cabbage family, raw and green potatoes, green beans, grapefruit, rhubarb, plums, lemons, avocado. Parakeets also need a mineral block and a cuttlebone in their cage. These provide all the minerals and trace elements that they need. Offer spray millet every so often as a treat. And of course fresh water daily. Housing    Provide a roomy cage with the minimum dimensions of 2. The ideal size is 4. Preferably a cage with horizontal bars to make climbing easier. You can also attach a perchplay area on top of the cage. In the cage have about three perches of different diameters or branches with some angling without the sandpaper guards. A swing and mirror among other toys are available but be sure to leave enough room for flying Food and water dishes, preferably automatic dispensing, or if not, ones with guards to prevent waste contamination. Clips to hold spray millet and fresh food. A bath house with a textured bottom is a favorite, or a slow running faucet will do. Provide a breeding box if breeding is what you have in mind. Maintenance    The basic cage care includes daily cleaning of the water and food dishes. Weekly you should wash all the perches and dirty toys, and the floor should be washed about every other week. A total hosing down and disinfecting of an aviary should be done yearly, replacing anything that needs to be freshened, such as old dishes, toys and perches. Handling and training    Take it slow at first and let the parakeet get used to you and its new surroundings before trying to get him to go onto your finger. Allow flying time and dont worry about catching him to put him back into the cage, leave the cage door open and sooner or later he will get hungry. After a while curiosity will overcome fear and training can begin. Most but not all parakeets have the inclination to talk, be repetitive and patient. Activities Free flying time is very important. Try to offer several hours a day in a bird safe room. A bird tree this can be made by wiring branches together into a tree or surrounding a tall house plant with perches, not poisonous of course, is very useful. Set it across the room from the cage, so that they fly back and forth. This will provide them with ample exercise. Breeding    The male parakeets cere is blue and the females is tan or light yellow. The cere is the area located at the base of the beak, just below the forehead or crown area. It is where the two nostril type openings nares are also located. There are a few exceptions, but for the most part this coloration is fairly accurate. In young parakeets, under 3 months, it is pale pink to tanish but changes after sexual maturity. If a pair of parakeets are ready to mate they will court one another first by playing and then feeding each other. The male then attempts a balancing act on the females back and lowers his tail under hers till the vents connect. The female picks the nesting sight and lays her eggs, one or two every other day, for a total of 4 to 6 eggs in a clutch. Incubation is 1. 8 days but the hen will remain on the nest till the chicks start to get feathers. Separate the nesting hen from the other parakeets. Nesting material is not necessary till after the chicks hatch then you can cover the bottom of the box with pine shavings, never saw dust. Be sure that the hen is feeding the young and if not, hand rearing may be necessary. Potential Problems    The most common would be a parakeet plucking out its own feathers. This is usually caused from loneliness and boredom. Another problem is if the leg band is too tight then a veterinarian will have to remove it. If taken care of, the parakeet is a hardy pet well worth the money and effort Availability Budgies are readily available and inexpensive. Author Clarice Brough, CASTina 2. My two budgies got out of their cage today, the cage fell from the hanger outside and they flew off, I am so scared and worried about them, does anyone know if they can survive in the wild here in Oregon, I have the cage outside with the large side door open and food for them, in the hopes they may get hungry and come back to it. I know that that will probably not happen, however I am offering them food and will continue to put it out for them so they have a food source. Please if you if they can survive out there let me know. I am praying they can and do. I am also praying they come back to the safety of our home, they would fly around the house, land on us and talk to us. I miss them so much already.
